Surgery could cure migraines

migrainesA surgical procedure in selected areas of the brain could cure migraines, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the Society of Plastic Surgeons U.S. Seattle (Washington) recently.

The scientists indicated that most of 79 patients who underwent this operation five years ago now show that they are cured of the disease in the United States affecting 30 million people.

Migraine is a severe headache and people who suffer are sensitive to light and noise. Usually suffer attacks of nausea and vomiting.

According to the results of the study’s final analysis, from surgery in only 10 patients required a second operation after detection of other trigger points of evil in the brain.

Of the 69 remaining, 61 had a positive reaction to surgery and 20 were removed completely migraine episodes. In 41 there was a considerable reduction of the problem and only eight experienced less than 50 percent improvement or no change.

These data provide strong evidence that surgical manipulation of one or more points in the brain of migraine triggers can eliminate, cure or reduce the frequency, duration and intensity of the problem, the report said.

“The headaches are disabling migraine and this surgical option offers hope to those who suffer,” said Bahman Guyuron, director of the Department of Plastic Surgery, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University.

Essential nutrients

Nutrients are essential, we tend to forget. We pay much attention to what we are supposed to avoid when we eat (especially outside) that should make us reflect on the need to compose our menus at different nutritional levels.

Of course, we are all supposed to avoid overeating, too much salt foods, putting too much butter and cheese sauces on our foods. We are supposed to avoid all this in order not to clog our arteries and keep our waistlines under control. But conversely, what could be our health problems if we do not eat enough something? What should we order more at a restaurant or buy more to the kitchen to get more nutrients?

Essential nutrients

According to a recent study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the seven most neglected nutrients (international average) are (from most to least deficient deficient): potassium, fiber, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C.

Take calcium for example (which may, with vitamin D, boost weight loss). Currently, 9 out of 10 girls do not consume enough calcium. This lack of calcium affects significantly the likelihood of developing bone fractures and osteoporosis later in life.

List the 3 nutrients consumed in priority:

1) Potassium
Potassium regulates blood pressure. To address the lack of potassium, eat the following foods: citrus, melons, bananas, lima beans, potatoes, spinach, etc.
Suggestion menu: spinach or the Tuscan spinach salad with orange slices.

2) Dietary Fiber
Fiber helps digestion, lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of cancer and provide satiety. To address the deficiency in dietary fiber, eat the following foods: oatmeal, brown rice, cereals, beans, fruits, vegetables, etc.
Suggested menu: sushi with brown rice, accompanied by cucumber salad.

3) Vitamin E
Vitamin E supports the immune system, healthy skin and acts as an antioxidant to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. To fill the deficiency in vitamin E, eat the following foods: vegetable oils, avocados, nuts, etc.
Suggested menu: sliced avocado sandwich with mayo low fat.

Rheumatoid arthritis: alcohol slow progression

Moderate consumption of alcohol may slow rheumatoid arthritis, according to a study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation of joints, which evolves in spurts over dozens of years. The risk factor is smoking better established.

Axel Finckh and colleagues from Geneva University Hospitals have followed 2908 people with the disease for four years during which their X-rays of joints were taken regularly.

The disease progressed more slowly in people who consume occasionally or daily alcohol consumption than those that do. But this protective effect was not present among heavy drinkers and their condition was deteriorating even faster.

Slowing the progression of the disease among non-drinkers and moderate drinkers was not significant enough to be evident in everyday life in terms of symptoms or disability, the researchers say. But, if the progression is slowed over decades, the gap may become important. The benefits were most marked among men, which could be explained by the fact that 27% of men said drink daily compared to 14% of women.

These results confirm those of previous studies and work done on mice. The researchers suggest that moderate consumption of alcohol may reduce inflammation (by decreasing the activity of the immune system) while a higher consumption may encourage it.

Authors would not encourage people with the disease who do not consume alcohol to do so because of the potential risks of such use. But those who already drink moderately should not be encouraged to stop, do they.
