Drinking coffee reduced risk of endometrial cancer

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

endometrial cancerWomen who drink at least two daily cups of coffee have less risk of endometrial cancer, according to a study that found that drinking coffee protected especially women who are overweight or obese.

A team from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, led by Dr. Emilie Friberg, surveyed twice at 60 634 Swedish women over coffee, to enter Swedish Mammography Cohort Study between 1987 and 1990, and 1997.

During the 17 years that, on average, the authors controlled for the patients, 677 women (1 percent) developed endometrial cancer. The average age at diagnosis was 67 years.

Those who drank two or more cups daily were significantly less likely to develop endometrial cancer than those who drank less of the infusion.

Each additional cup per day was associated with a 10 percent lower risk of developing cancer, even after considering age and other factors potentially related to the risk of endometrial cancer in the general female population.

But the team also noted that the highest effect the women were obese or overweight, which, according to the team, have “increased risk of endometrial cancer.”

Each additional cup of coffee fell by 12 percent the risk of endometrial cancer in overweight women and 20 percent in the obese, wrote in International Journal of Cancer.

The authors suggest that coffee alter blood sugar, fat cells and estrogen, which plays a key role in the development of endometrial cancer. However, the authors indicated that the new results should be confirmed in other populations.

Surgery could cure migraines

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

migrainesA surgical procedure in selected areas of the brain could cure migraines, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the Society of Plastic Surgeons U.S. Seattle (Washington) recently.

The scientists indicated that most of 79 patients who underwent this operation five years ago now show that they are cured of the disease in the United States affecting 30 million people.

Migraine is a severe headache and people who suffer are sensitive to light and noise. Usually suffer attacks of nausea and vomiting.

According to the results of the study’s final analysis, from surgery in only 10 patients required a second operation after detection of other trigger points of evil in the brain.

Of the 69 remaining, 61 had a positive reaction to surgery and 20 were removed completely migraine episodes. In 41 there was a considerable reduction of the problem and only eight experienced less than 50 percent improvement or no change.

These data provide strong evidence that surgical manipulation of one or more points in the brain of migraine triggers can eliminate, cure or reduce the frequency, duration and intensity of the problem, the report said.

“The headaches are disabling migraine and this surgical option offers hope to those who suffer,” said Bahman Guyuron, director of the Department of Plastic Surgery, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University.
